One Hundred Years of Futurism: Milan celebrates with an Exhibition

This year Futurism celebrates its 100th birthday, and Milan, the city which inspired the artworks belonging to the greatest painters of futurist vanguard, celebrates with a really spectacular exhibition: “Futurismo 1909 – 2009 Velocità+Arte+Azione” (“Futurism 1909 – 2009 Speed+Art+Action”).

The event is a real explosion of creativity, light, colour and movement. As many as 400 artworks on exhibition, among 240 paintings, drawings, sculptures, theatre scenographies, and photographs which retrace the whole artistic itinerary of the great artists of Italian futurism.

The exhibition is a sort of documentary film which goes back the evolutionary way of Futurism, from ‘10s, which saw works of exceptional creativity, until ‘30s, still inspired by this movement.

On exhibition we find several expressions of this innovative vanguard, exciting, energetic and in some cases prophetic. Suffice to bear in mind “La città  ideale” (“The ideal city”) by Umberto Boccioni, an oil painting painted immediately after the publication of the Futurist Manifesto in 1910, the real first futurist work. Soaked with almost naturalistic colours, indeed it’s a real power and dynamism source. The painting got its inspiration from the Milan of the time, the Italian city which was the absolute protagonist of the cultural and industrial development, a city in full expansion, which grows and looks at the future.

Therefore, portraits of a Milan “on the stocks”, this work more than others, creates in this moment a peculiar suggestion, it seems almost to see “today’s Milan” which gets ready to become the “Milan of the future”, of 2015, year of a city which is the undisputed protagonist of the international development.

Therefore, a really unique exhibition absolutely not to miss, where it will be possible to admire artworks which wrote the books of history of art, such as for example the ones belonging to Giacomo Balla, Enrico Prampolini and Fortunato Depero.

Accompanied by a long series of events entirely dedicated to theatre, to fashion, to cinema and to dance, the exhibition “Futurism 1909 – 2009. Speed+Art+Action” is waiting for you from 6th February to 7thJune  at Palazzo Reale in Milan.
