Paper in all shapes and sizes, will be the undisputed protagonist of the city of Lucca from September 5th to October 3rd 2010, thanks to “Cartasia: the Preview”, the event which introduces the fifth edition of Cartasia, the Biennial of Contemporary Art dedicated to paper, which will take place from June 19th to July 18th 2010, when a real open-air exhibition will be set up in the city of Lucca.
Artists coming from every corner of the world will participate in the Biennial of Contemporary Art 2010, selected through a competition aimed to encourage the planning and the feasibility of works and projects made just of paper. The masters will create paper works and huge installations which will be placed in the most beautiful squares of the city of Lucca and Porcari (a municipality in the province of Lucca). In addition, installations’ areas will host several artistic events, such as cultural happenings, concerts, theatre and dance performances, literary meetings.
The preview will be held on Saturday 5th September at 5.00 p.m. in Piazza Felice Orsi in the municipality of Porcari, with the installation of two magnificent paper sculptures: Ri-Parliamone by Enzo Iorio, Massimo Cincidda and Leonardo Azzimi, and subsequently, at 7.00 p.m. in Piazza Anfiteatro, visitors will have the chance to marvel at the installation Come Diamanti by Stefano Giovacchini.
This year, the exhibition theme chosen by the Organization Committee will be “Creativity as a renewable resource”. The historical period we live in, needs that artists, who communicate the spirit of our time through their visions and creativity, express universal and innovative messages. The exhibition wants artists to think of themes and issues which predominate in our contemporary daily life, such as the possibility (and need) to recycle materials and the renewal of the available resources.
We remind you that besides several paper works, at the exhibition there will be a series of theatre performances and literary meetings. In addition, during such evenings, the audience will be involved and encouraged in a creative thinking over in four different workshops, which face some issues of writing, such as styles, languages and narrative techniques.
Therefore, September is a month rich of important and striking cultural and artistic meetings, where paper will be our guide, giving us a taste of what the Biennial 2010 will be.
“Cartasia: the Preview” is supported by the Cultural Association Metropolis, in cooperation with the City of Lucca and the Municipality of Porcari.
We remind you also that the Biennial accepts nominations for individual exhibitions: until April 2010 in fact, you will have the opportunity to propose your works for the realization of exhibitions and events.
…So, if you have talent, free your fantasy and create a new dimension made just of paper!
“Cartasia: the Preview” awaits you all in great numbers!
