What’s better than spending Christmas time in the charming and historical Rome?
Holidays are coming and this could be a perfect occasion to strolling around the streets of Rome in the footsteps of history and to discover the great cultural heritage and the several traditions, having fun with the many events offered by the Italian capital.
From December 8th to January 6th, the city will offer visitors a wide range of initiatives and activities organized by the Municipality of Rome with the promising slogan “Roma Città Natale. Una festa unica al mondo” (“Rome – the City of Christmas. A celebration in a class by itself”).
The famous square Piazza Navona this year as well will be filled with stalls on the occasion of the traditional and very expected Christmas market, where the absolute protagonist will be the Befana with her brooms and socks full of sweets. This is a perfect opportunity for purchasing gifts and decorations, and also for turning back in time and be children again!
Funny animations and performances are also scheduled in the shopping streets of Rome.
In addition, there will be several appointments dedicated to solidarity with consumer goods and fund-raisings to make the poor’ Christmas nicer.
And, of course, Christmas time wouldn’t be complete without Music! Many concerts are in fact scheduled, and among the others, we remind you the traditional “Happy Christmas from Rome” (on 23rd December at Basilica dell’Ara Coeli in Campidoglio), with famous artists such as Amii Stewart, Michael Bolton, Ennio Morricone and the soprano Cecilia Gasdia.
And you will have the chance to marvel at everything mentioned in the wonderful landscape offered by the Italian capital: the historical centre of Rome, which will be decorated with more than sixty 7 metres high trees and it will be enlightened by the traditional Christmas lights. On the other hand, in Piazza del Popolo and on the bridges of Milvio, Sant’Angelo and Principe Amedeo, there will be several innovative bright screenings dedicated to environmental issues. In addition, this year there will be also the project “Diseganre la luce” (“Drawing the Light”), which will allow everyone to screen their favourite writings on buildings and monuments, thanks to a very amusing technology!
Not enough? This is Rome Christmas celebration, the only one in the world. Italians and tourists will have the chance to enjoy the festival “Natale all’Auditorium” (“Christmas at Auditorium”), which obviously will take place at the famous building Auditorium Parco della Musica, the favoured place for entertainment in Rome! Here as well, visitors will have the opportunity to find their Christmas gifts at the Caravanserraglio, an exhibition market where it’s easy to find arts and crafts products and brand name goods together. In addition, here you will find entertainment for all the family, with the ice rink “Sottozero” (“Below Zero”) which will welcome your elegant vaults and tumbles until February 7th.
Obviously, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, music is the real special guest, and there is something to suit every taste: the Italian singer Claudio Baglioni, the Galà Rachmaninoff by the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and the “Juniorchestra: Christmas, music and guys” which will put on the stage young musicians and the White Voices choirs at Roma Gospel Festival, whose spiritual music by the best American gospel groups will become the soundtrack of this Roman Christmas. Don’t miss the special concert on December 24th, from the Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti!
Finally, the very expected Festival Luzzati dedicated to the famous Genoese illustrator and organized by the Ministry of Cultural Activities and Heritage. At the Auditurium, an exhibition entitled “Emanuele Luzzati. Fantasie” will be set up and will put on display drawings, drafts and set designs made by the artist. In addition, there will be interesting initiatives, such as creative workshops for children (creating Christmas decorations, building a little theatre, using the technique of collage, making theatre costumes) and reading fairytales and epic tales out loud. Finally, a theatre performance dedicated to Luzzati and called “Candido Viaggio tragicomico nel migliore dei mondi possibili” will be put on stage from 10th to 15th December.
