Florence celebrates Easter Day with the Burst of the Cart

This year you can’t miss on Easter day – Sunday 24th April 2011 – the most pyrotechnic and frisky way of celebrating the Resurrection.

On April, 24th 2011, “the most traditional tradition” of Florence will come back: the very famous and long-expected “Burst of the Cart”!

Fancy that such a historical ceremony dates back to the first Florentine crusade which took place in order to rescue the Holy Sepulchre from unfaithful people and still today the event is welcome by the enthusiasm of all Florence’s inhabitants.

The official ceremony will begin at the Romanic church of Santi Apostoli, where the priest will rub 3 stones of the Holy Sepulchre which in the past Goffredo di Buglione gave as a gift to Pazzino de’ Pazzi. The rubbing of the stones will light up a fire which, in turn, will light the Paschal candle. Later, the fire of the candle will make the coal glowing.

The Gonfalone of Florence together with priests, authorities and the flag of the Pazzi family will march in procession until the Baptistery for the religious mass and subsequently will arrive to Florence’s Cathedral.

In the meantime, the famous Brindellone (the cart) will be decorated with ornaments and carried by white oxen in the streets of the city, from Porta al Prato to piazza Duomo, between the Baptistery and the Cathedral.

The cart will be linked to the Dome Main Altar by a steel thread, and during the daily midday mass, at 11 a.m. the Cardinal Archbishop will light a rocket in the shape of a dove, Easter peace’ symbol, which will come down through the thread ‘til the “Brindellone”, which will burst with lights, colors and many fireworks!

A perfect occasion for watching a piece of history of Florence and marveling at the many city’s treasures!
