56th Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics in Venice

The traditional competition among the 8-rowers galleons representing the ancient Italian Maritime Republics, Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice, this year will take place in Venice on Sunday June, 12th 2011.

As a matter of fact, such an event, born in 1955, every year takes place in one of the four cities that commemorate the most important historical happenings linked to their own city.

As usual, the race will be preceded by the renowned historical parade, during which each Republic will wear period clothes and proudly show in the streets of Venice the flags with the coat of arms of its own city, standards, trumpets and drums; the famous parade gives an important contribute to recreate the historical, magnificent scenery of the time of the Maritime Republics.

Each group has the duty to remember and interpret episodes and personages linked to the history of its own city, our country and its role in the Mediterranean Sea.

The challenge among the crews of the cities – each one made up of 8 rowers and a cox on board of boats made up of fibreglass with different colours and figureheads: the winged horse of Amalfi, the dragon of Genoa, the eagle of Pisa and the winged lion of Venice, which symbolizes the patron saint of the city, St. Mark the Evangelist.
