86th edition of the Traditional Rowing Race in La Spezia

On August, 7th 2011, the most beloved sport event in La Spezia will come back: the Palio del Golfo (the Rowing Race of the Gulf), which on its 86th edition, also this year will present many surprises, side events and shows.

The Palio of La Spezia, taking place every first Sunday of August in the waters in front of the promenade of the city (Morin), is a challenging rowing race among 13 fishing boats handmade by local craftsmen, created with peculiar features in order to make them faster in water.

Such a rowing race takes its origins from a challenge among the crews of fishing boats in the waters of the Gulf of La Spezia (or Gulf of the Poets), where there is mussels farming (or “muscoli” as the citizens call them).

In the past, such races were very important because the winner could have the priority in discharging goods and fish, rising in this way their profit.

Still nowadays, such a challenge is very expected and beloved by all the citizens of La Spezia, especially by the borgate (districts and towns taking place in the competition): Porto Venere, Le Grazie, Fezzano, Cadimare, Marola, CRDD (Circolo ricreativo dipendenti difesa), Canaletto, Fossamastra, Muggiano, San Terenzo, Venere Azzurra, Lerici and Tellaro.

The side events will begin on Friday night with the parade of the borgate starting from Piazza Cavour until Morin promenade, where Cadimare, Fossamastra and Crdd will give the Palios won in the last edition back to the mayor.

In the afternoon of 6th August as usual, there will be the control of the boats in competition in Piazza del Mercato with the traditional historical commemoration of sidecars in the streets of the city.

Later, at 8.30 p.m. the dinner with borgate will wait for you in Corso Cavour.

The great day is 7th August: at 4.45 p.m. the benediction of the boats in the waters in front of Morin promenade.

At 5 p.m. the Women’s Palio begins, followed by the Juniors’ Palio at 6 p.m.

At 6.30 p.m., there will be the great sky dive of the parachutists of the “Teseo Tesei” Group divers.

Finally, at 7.30 p.m., the 86th Palio del Golfo begins and you will have the chance to watch it from the Morin promenade of La Spezia.

And after the race, what a better way for continuing celebrations? Fireworks will wonder you at 10.30 p.m.
