The 55th edition of Palio dei Somari, a race among donkeys, will take place in Torrita di Siena (a town located near Siena, in Tuscany) from 17th to 25th March 2012.
It is a competition among 8 donkeys, each one representing one of the eight contradas (districts) of the city and it has become a traditional event appreciated by Tuscans and also many visitors.
Celebrations will begin on Saturday 17th, with the draw of the 4 heats and the opening to the public of the renowned inns.
Visitors will also find in Torrita di Siena events and theatre performances all the week long, games and competitions among contradas and, on Friday, some special dinners in honour of the Palio.
On Saturday night, you’ll have the chance to taste the specialties of a medieval banquet (with reservation) in a special and charming atmosphere, watching the blessing of palio and in the end a competition will be held among couples of flag fliers and drummers representing the 8 contradas.
The official race will take place on Sunday 25th March: four heats among two contradas, in which donkeys have to run 3 laps.
The five contradas that will win at least one race will run in the final race. There’s no a favoured donkey: as everybody knows, it is a strange animal, stubborn and haughty, able to run 3 laps and stop at a meter from the arrival. So, until one crosses the line, nothing is certain.
The glory of the winning donkey, jockey and contradas is celebrated by the whole town with joy, a glass of good wine, a sweet pancake, songs and stornellos (short popular Italian lyrics).
So, we wait for you all in Torrita di Siena (just 50 mins from Siena) from Saturday 17th to Sunday 25th March 2012 for celebrating 55th Palio dei Somari.
