It is a festival particularly popular with Venetians as it combines a religious theme with a spectacular celebration thanks to the phantasmagorical fireworks that will enchant people in Venice on Saturday night from 11.30 pm until midnight.
At dusk, just as they have done for centuries, numerous small boats decked out with balloons, decortions, begin to flock into St. Mark Bay and the Giudecca Canal.
Into the boats all the participants enjoy a sumptuous typical Venetian dinner.
The Reedemer feast is a tradition dating back to 1577 and its name takes origins after the Reedentor church that was designed by Palladio and resides on the island of Giudecca.
Venice was suffering from a terrible plague and the Republic’s senate voted to build a temple on the Giudecca island in honour of Christ the Reedemer, and the Venetians promised to go there every year on third Sunday of July, if the plague stopped.
The Reedemer celebrations include a solemn religious service and procession presided over by the patriarch of the city, and the weekend ends with a series of gondola races, organized as part of the “Voga alla Veneta”.
