Carnival of Viareggio celebrates its 140th anniversary!

Here we go again! The funniest and most amusing carnival in Italy is coming back: the one of the famous personage of Burlamacco, the masked parades on Sundays, the multicoloured and huge papier-mâché floats: the world-famous Carnival of Viareggio, which this year celebrates its 140th anniversary!

This year, the so much beloved masked parades will take place on 3rd, 10th, 12th, 17th February and 3rd March, in a myriad of confetti and streamers and in company of much music, songs and dances, for the joy of adults and children.

This year, the Carnival of Viareggio will take a break because of the general elections and the masked parade scheduled for Sunday 24th February will be postponed to Sunday 3rd March. By the way, it seems that the Carnival Foundation want to organize an event on Sunday 24th February at Cittadella or in piazza Mazzini with admission free.

As mentioned before, the closing masked parade will take place on Sunday 3rd March at 3 pm and will go on until night. At the end of the parade, the best floats will be judged and awarded by the jury on the stage in Piazza Mazzini. To end with a bang, as usual, you will enjoy fantastic fireworks that will end 140th anniversary of the Carnival of Viareggio.

Visitors will have the chance to marvel at the famous floats on the waterfront of Viareggio on the following dates:

Sunday 3rd February – 3 pm

Sunday 10th February -3 pm

Tuesday 12th February – 2.50 pm

Sunday 17th February – 3 pm

Sunday 3rd March – 3 pm.

In addition, we remind all parents that on Thursday 7th February there will be a great party for children, Giovedì Grasso in Maschera, which will be held in Piazza Santa Maria from 2 pm on.

On Sunday 17th February, a Drag Queen show “Regina d’Inverno” will be held at 6 pm in Piazza Mazzini.

Free Guided Tours from 4.30 to 5.30 pm
Extraordinary opening on Sundays of the Masked Parades from 9.30 to 11.30 am.

From 9th to 19th February – Centro Congressi Principe di Piemonte
Exhibition “Viareggio in Maschera: le sfilate”

Wednesday 13th February – Ragazzi Library at 4 pm
Event for children “Alpi Apuane: leggende, fate, folletti e streghe”.
