The masterpieces of Tuscan Macchiaioli on display in Viareggio

If you’re travelling throughout Tuscany in this period and one of your scheduled stops is Viareggio, you’ll have the chance to enjoy not just its fabulous and famous Carnival, but also to marvel at wonderful pieces of art.

We’re talking about the paintings at the art exhibition entitled “I Macchiaioli per l’Orangerie. Opere in Anteprima” (“The Macchiaioli for the Orangerie. Works on Preview”) held at Centro Matteucci per l’Arte Moderna in Viareggio. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit such an exhibit until March, 17th 2013.

Why does the title say “on preview”? In short, the exhibition centre’s aim is to show on preview a selection of 15 works that will be put on display at the important exhibition “The Macchiaioli 1850-1877. Italian Impressionists?” which will take place at Orangerie Museum (Orsay Museum) in Paris from April, 9th to July, 22nd 2013. The exhibition, conceived by the museum director Guy Cogeval, will have a second venue: the MAPFRE foundation of Madrid (Sept. 20th 2013 – Jan. 6th 2014).

Visitors will have the chance to appreciate stunning artworks created by artists like Abbati, Banti, Boldini, Borrani, Cabianca, Cecioni, Costa, D’Ancona, De Tivoli, Fattori, Lega, Signorini, Zandomeneghi.

In this exhibit, the Macchiaioli are presented from a new critic point of view, due to the recent studies they have been subject to, based on documents and recovery of very important works.

In the title suggested for the exhibition of Paris “The Macchiaioli 1850-1877. Italian Impressionists?”, the old issue about a possible parallelism between the great Impressionist movement and the work of the Macchiaioli is still open, whereas the selection of Viareggio removes all doubt and underlines the fact that the group of Macchiaioli is “one of the most poetic movements presenting many similarities with the plastic researches led by impressions artists”.

If you wish to marvel at such wonderful masterpieces, go to the beautiful seaside resort of Viareggio, which is still celebrating its colourful Carnival.
