Milan’s passion for design is famous as it is the second tradition of the city after fashion. Like each year in April, Lombardy’s capital is looking forward to the tens of thousands Italians and foreigners coming to visit the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (the most important event of its kind in the world) but also all the other events spread in the different quarters of Milan during the Design Week.
The Salone del Mobile takes place in the Rho Fiera complex and is aimed for workers in the sector, except during the weekend when it’s also open to the public. If you’re going to be part of the 40.000 people visiting the 12 and 13 April, prepare to see furniture of each style (classic, modern, contemporary) coming from the whole world and aimed to each room thanks to the side exhibitions focusing on furnishing accessories, kitchen and bathroom.
One space is completely dedicated to the new generation of designers: 200 artists will display their creations in the Salone Satellite and meet with professionals of the industry.
Events of the Fuorisalone
For those who have never been to Milan, the Fuorisalone (literally the “outside exhibition”) is an opportunity to walk around the quarters of Brera, Zona Tortona, Porta Venezia, via Sarpi and so many others. Each area organizes its own program based on a theme. You’ll find more than 600 city events during these 6 days and 9 itineraries to not get lost in the design world.
If you decide to give a look to the Brera Design District, the artists and culture’s area par excellence, you will see, among other things, the “Robot Therapy” exhibition or the “Packaging Oscar 2014” project, both hosted by the Mediateca Santa Teresa (the area headquarter). Many showrooms and exhibitors will also open during the Brera Design Night on Friday evening, thus letting visitors discover the illuminated neighborhood and its businesses in a magical ambiance.
If you want to familiarize your children with design or simply to have a peaceful walk, there’s a possibility to drop them off at the Rigo Tondo nursery which is furnished especially for the circumstance and organizes activities in order for them to discover the notion of “beauty”.
