Once again, the open-air Gran Teatro Giacomo Puccini will host great guests and breathtaking operas, for a summer rich in music.

As usual, the programme schedules the celebration of eternal melodies composed by the master Giacomo Puccini and wonderful evenings of lyric music will begin, dedicated to one of the most important composers of opera in the world, who was born in the city of Lucca in 1858.

The Festival Puccini 2010 will be inaugurated by La Fanciulla del West (on 16th and 23rd July and 7th August), Puccini’s masterpiece, 100 years after its first premier at Metropolitan Opera in New York, on 10th December 1910.

Later on, there will be other three titles on the playbill:

Madama Butterfly (17th and 25th July – 1st, 14th, 22nd August)

Tosca (24th, 30th July – 8th, 13th, 21st August)

Turandot (31st July – 6th, 12th, 20th August)

We remind you also that the Festival Puccini is not just Opera.

The Festival’s spectators in fact, will have the chance to marvel at one of the greatest female voices in the world, the American soprano Renée Fleming, who will inflame the stage during the Gala Concert on 28th July, with the extraordinary presence of the 15 years old Anthony Arcaini, director and composer, a little genius of music.

Finally, on 11th August, the timeless and overall opera Romeo and Juliet, with the notorious melodies by Sergej Sergeevič Prokof’ev and the dancers of the Imperial Russian Ballet of Gediminas Tarando, Maria Sokolnikova and Alexsander Smolyaninov of the Teatro Bolshoi.

This year, Cartasia 2010, the Biennial of Contemporary Art began on June 19th and visitors from Italy and abroad will have the chance to enjoy it until July 18th 2010.

Which is the main theme for this year? The fifth edition of the exhibition has a very eloquent title: “Play Green Creativity”: fun, ecology and creativity interlinked through the artistic use of paper, a simple material being the only protagonist of such an event.

The exhibition will focus on issues like recycling and sustainable development by showing works by international artists coming from all over the world, selected by the competition’s jury. Among the countries represented by the several artists, besides Italy we find Russia, Mexico and England.

Besides the several en plein air installations, many other contemporary art events are scheduled: exhibitions, vernissages, literary meetings, theatre workshops and performances.

In the works, we find four personal exhibitions of artists who use paper as an essential element for expressing their own creativity: Caterina Crepax, Hemmes, Anna Onesti and Hiroaki Asahara. And just this evening, on Thursday July 1st at 6.30 pm, they will be inaugurated at La Cavallerizza: Rituali senza tempo by Anna Onesti, Strappi by Hemmes, Sogni vestiti di Carta by Caterina Crepax and the collective exhibition Amateras.

And of course, such an artistic background couldn’t be without a theatre workshop! Living the Theatre: Teatro Migliorativo/Teatro Verde in fact will focus on the important themes of ecological disasters and will suggest participants new visions of life. The workshop will be held in Lucca, with afternoon and will conclude with a performance. If you would like to take part in the workshop, you have to enroll by July 3rd.

Since last Saturday 19thJune, the historical and traditional Battle of Flowers has begun in the city of Ventimiglia, a town located in the Western Ligurian Riviera.

We are talking about a very ancient event, which takes its origins in the ceremonies celebrated by the farmers in order to pay homage to the rebirth of vegetation in springtime, because they were aware of the bounty of “mother earth” and knew that good harvests depended on her.

Throughout the years, this event turned into a sort of carnival, with a parade of papier-mâché floats decorated with thousands flowers and colors, and subsequently, with floats covered in a mosaic work made up of flowers. Since 1933, the Battle of Flowers in Ventimiglia became the only original one for good, differing from the other many similar parades on the Riviera for its elegant and artistic flowers arrangements.

Today as in the past, the awakening of nature in Ventimiglia is celebrated in a very original way in such a wonderful corner of Ligurian Riviera, in the province of Imperia. It’s no surprise that the town is one of the greatest flowers producers at international level.

And now let’s talk about the next events: today Monday 21st June at 9 pm there will be many competitions and sport events in the historical centre and the 10th lottery “Battaglia dei Fiori”. In addition, on Friday 23rd July the 5th edition of “Battaglia dei Fiori di Giovani Carristi” will take place starting from 8.30 pm, a competition reserved just to the youth, a parade of floats and masks with confetti, musical bands and much fun.

For further information about Liguria, beaches in Liguria, etc., please visit the website www.aboutliguria.com

After 2 years of restoration and radical renovation, the Museo di Storia della Scienza (Institute and Museum of the History of Science)in Florence reopens its doors to the public under a different name: Museo Galileo (Galileo Museum).

Such an event is conceived in order to celebrate the International Astronomy Year (2009), an UNESCO initiative to commemorate the astronomy and science discoveries made by the Pisan scientist. And what’s a better way to pay homage to him than a new and modern Museum?

The Museo Galileo will host more than 1,000 invaluable instruments and experimental apparatuses belonging to Medici and Lorraine families, among which we find the only original telescopes of the great scientist and the telescope lens with which Galileo discovered Jupiter’s moons.

An entirely changed space, endowed with technological avant-garde instruments and devices for the conservation and safeguard of the objects on display and highlight their esthetic quality.

The exhibition trail will let visitors marvel at the several scientific instruments and devices with the help of multimedia systems, such as portable interactive video-guides — used for the first time in a museum — that will make the most complex instruments fully understandable even to non-specialist visitors. As a matter of fact, it will be possible to access to hypertext pages, 3D animations, and biographies. Visitors will have also the chance to use the video-guides to select an itinerary through the museum tailored to their specific interests.

Another curiosity? On the occasion of the museum opening, the remains of the scientist will be put on display, that is to say, two fingers and a tooth, which disappeared a century ago and recently have been found again by two Florentine collectors, and now will be put on display together with another finger already kept by the museum. Such remains were taken in 1737, when the corpse was exhumed to be moved into the monumental sepulchre of Basilica di Santa Croce.

Well, we can’t say that the Museum has not originality or unique and rare objects!!

In fact, since last March 25th, one of the “hottest” exhibitions is under way at Musei di Strada Nuova and the Galleria di Palazzo Bianco (Gallery of White Palace) in Genoa, Liguria.

The exhibition, entitled “Storie di passioni, amori e tradimenti dai Depositi di Palazzo Bianco” (“Stories about Passion, Love and Betrayals from the museum storage of Palazzo Bianco”) will be open to the public until June 27th 2010. So, visitors will have still few weeks to marvel at such art masterpieces on display in Genoa gathered for the iconographic exhibition dedicated to the theme of “forbidden love”, showing to the public unforeseen pieces, which have been kept preserved in the museum storage until nowadays.

On the occasion of such an event, visitors will have the chance to marvel at wonderful “never seen before” paintings, an initiative aimed to start a cycle of thematic exhibitions that will let visitors see those works that have always been set aside and now will be put on display in order to satisfy everybody’s curiosity, art lovers and not.

Among the several stories told by shapes, play of light and shadow and shades, we find the one of Silvio and Dorinda from the “Jerusalem Delivered”, Angelica and Medoro from “The Frenzy of Orlando” and Cleopatra and Lucrezia from the Roman history…and this is only a taste!

Obviously, the exhibition is accompanied by descriptive panels put near each painting that will tell us about the charming and intriguing stories of such passions.

For the ones who don’t know the city of Genoa very well, the exhibition will be held in the wonderful background of Via Garibaldi, also called “Strada Nuova”, which has been included in the UNESCO list and where we find the Gallery of White Palace hosting the most important art gallery in Liguria.

The opening hours is the following: Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 7 pm, on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm, closed on Mondays.

We are talking about a great exhibition dedicated to the influence the Spanish painter had on modern art, from Picasso to Bacon. An extraordinary collection made up of over 180 works, like paintings, drawings and engravings.

Therefore, the aim of the exhibition is to link and analyze the connections between the painter and other famous modern artists, by starting from a deep research about the themes faced by the Aragonese artist: the image of the new society, the expression of subjectivity, reactions with gestures, and violence.

Among the artists present at the exhibition, we find: Delacroix, Klee, David, Kokoschka, Victor Hugo, Mirò, Klinger, Picasso, Nolde, Bacon, Kirchner, Pollock, Guttuso and de Kooning.

Francisco Goya’s work had a great influence on all the artistic movements belonging to the 19th and 20th centuries, from the Impressionism to Symbolism, from Expressionism to Surrealism, and contributed to strongly influence the contemporary art and culture.

The importance of the body, irrationality, terror, fear, and violence are the incomparable features of Goya’s painting, elements that mark the painter style with immediately recognizable lights and shapes.

The exhibition is managed by Valeriano Bozal and Concepción Lomba, two important Spanish experts about Francisco Goya and contemporary art, supported by the Ministry of Cultural Activities and Heritage, and it was born from the cooperation among Sociedad Estatal para la Acción Cultural Exterior (SEACEX), Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación, Ministerio de Cultura di Spagna, Fundación Goya en Aragón and Palazzo Reale in Milan.

So, Milan awaits you all at the luxurious Palazzo Reale with the exhibition “Goya and the Modern World”, until June 27th 2010.

Emotions come back with several performances starring great artists and titles. In fact, since last April 29th, the 73rd edition of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the festival dedicated to the art of music, ballet and opera has come back in Florence. This year, the event brings with it the charming East, in the pursuit of exotic and multi-ethnic themes, from Mozart to contemporary music, with the title “Verso Oriente” (“Toward the East”).

The Maggio Fiorentino playbill schedules great opera titles, stunning concerts and breathtaking performances and shows, among several brand new personalities and artists.

Until June 22nd 2010, a series of performances will take place in Florence nights, keeping you company evening after evening in a mass of emotions in many theatres of Florence with operas, concerts and ballets, in which many great artists will perform, such as Muti, Metha, and others. The venues of such performances will be: Teatro Comunale, Piccolo Teatro, Teatro Pergola, Teatro Goldoni and the Aula Magna at the University.

Among the events in the works, many meetings with authors such as the one scheduled on May 25th with Marcello de Angelis. In addition, a brand new element of this edition is Jazz, which for the first time takes part in the event of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino: in fact, great names of jazz will arrive at the festival, such as the trumpet-player Paolo Fresu.

Considering the great success of the past editions, the Maggio Off Music Contest comes back also this year, the competition where young musicians, groups and singers (between 18 and 30 years old) challenge each other, among very different kinds of music: from rock to blues, from electronic music to metal…so, all the musical dimensions belonging to youth, between innovation and diversity.

As far as ballets is concerned, a performance by Guillaume Côté with Zdenek Konvalina and entitled “Impermanence” is scheduled on Sunday 23rd May.

These and many other performances and shows in Florence, until 22nd June 2010. Don’t miss it!
