The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Joseph (San Giuseppe) on the 19th March.

Frittelle per la festa di San GiuseppeThe Benedictine monks  were the first to celebrate him in 1030. It was made compulsory in 1621 by the Pope Gregory XV until 1977, when the 19th March became a common public holiday.

In a lot of catholic countries, the Father’s Day is observed on Saint Joseph’s Day.
Saint Joseph is the archetype of the devoted father and husband and, in the popular tradition, he also protects orphans, young single women and wretched people.

The Father’s Day tipical sweets are the “frittelle” which can be tasted in a lot of carnivals or town festivals.

Here are some events for Saint Joseph’s Celebration this year:

- Saint Joseph’s Fair in Carrara:
Saint Joseph’s Fair occurs in Marina di Carrara on the 19th March; it gathers more than 200 stands offering  every type of items and gives life to the town’s seabord.

- Saint Joseph’s Fair in La Spezia:
The traditional Saint Joseph’s Fair will be organized among the Giardini Pubblici.

- Saint Joseph and Woodcutters’ Little Fair (Fierucolina di San Giuseppe e dei Legnaioli) in Florence: organized by the Associazione Fierucola on the San Spirito Square, Oltrarno, Florence.

- Contrada dell’Onda district (Dupré Street), Siena:
Traditional Saint Joseph’s Fair (Father’s Day) with fritelle and locally made toys. Fishing organized by the Società delle Donne.

- Saint Joseph’s Fair in Florence:
The famous Florentine Santa Croce square becomes animated by many stands containing various goods.

Florence Artisan Chocolate Fair

Florence Artisan Chocolate Fair 2014 reached its 10th edition.

A careful selection of master chocolatiers, located in the magnificent setting of the Piazza Santa Maria Novella, will cheer you up during cold winter days with chocolate products, a delight to taste and to watch.

You will be fascinated by the smell of hot chocolate, and you could taste truffles, kisses, nougat, chocolate creams and pralines.

You will take a trip around the world of chocolate, with very important artisans coming coming from all sides of Italy and International exhibitors.

The Artisan Chocolate Fair will be open to the public from Friday, February 7 to Sunday, February 16th from 10am to 10pm.
On Sunday 16th the Exhibition will be closing early, at 8pm.

 

Florence Vintage Selection 2014, the 23rd edition at Leopolda Station

The 23rd edition of Vintage Selection is coming at  Stazione Leopolda in Florence.

From January 22nd to January 26th, the great spaces of the oldest railway station of Florence will host a great selection of clothing, gifts and vintage accessories.

The Vintage Selection is one of the most influential and prestigious market-exhibitions in Italy and Europe for fashion, design and vintage culture.

St Lucy Day Celebrations throughout Italy

Considered the procuress of eyes, the blind, oculists and electricians, the liturgical festival of St Lucy is celebrated on 13th December, some days before summer solstice.

St Lucy’s body, which is currently kept in the Church of San Geremia in Venice, in the past was stolen by the Byzantines in Siracusa and later was purloined by Venetians who conquered Constantinople.

St Lucy celebrations, patron saint of Siracusa, a town located in Sicily, nowadays is a recurring event that crowds many Italian squares with stalls nd stands selling sweets and typical local dishes.

Today we want to suggest you some of the most important Christmas appointments and events in Tuscany:

Let’s begin with the city of Florence:

As every year, Florence is going to host the very expected “Florence Noel”: an yearly fair organized by the Country Florence Association at Stazione Leopolda. An exhibition market dedicated to Christmas with a wide range of items among which you can choose your perfect Christmas gifts. A gift for the kids: the “Santa Claus House”, a place for children where they can meet the elves and leave them their letters. Admission fee: € 7

Santa Croce Christmas Market in Florence: from 28th November to 15th December the traditional German Christmas market comes back and brings in town delicious gastronomic specialties such as sausages, sauerkraut, pork knuckles, pretzels, strudels and other products. You can visit the market everyday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

In the green Mugello area:

“Magie dell’Avvento” Christmas market: as every year, this important market is held in the small village of Palazzuolo sul Senio, located in the heart of upper Mugello. Christmas market will be open to visitors from 10.00 a.m. in the historic center, while from 11.30 a.m. the gourmet stand will wait for you in Piazza IV Novembre. Dates: from 1st to 8th December and from 15th to 22nd December.

On the Versilia coast, (Tuscany):

Christmas markets in Viareggio “Villaggio di Babbo Natale”: from 8th to 26th December, in Mazzini Square, in collaboration with the municipality of Viareggio the Santa Claus Village is set up. 30 wooden houses selling local products and Christmas items from throughout Italy.

Christmas Markets in Siena: from December, 6th, Matteotti Square will host a Christmas Market from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. From December, 13th, Pian dei Mantelli will host the traditional Fair of St. Lucia and on 15th and 16th December, Mercato del Campo – a street market dedicated to the traditional, excellent Siena’s products – will take place in Piazza del Campo in Piazza del Campo
