Tuscany can boast of several records, especially one: this region was the first in the world to abolish the capital punishment. In fact on November 30th 1796, the enlightened Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo banished confiscation, torture and death penalty through a single law.

You should visit the most beautiful Italian cities… with running shoes on! After Venice Marathon, which took place some weeks ago, now it’s time for the Florence Marathon, whreas the Marathon of Milan will “change season” this year, and will be organized in spring.
On Sunday, November 29th, 10,000 athletes are expected at the beginning of the 42 km Florentine race, a sport event whose importance and popularity are exponentially growing year by year.
It is not by chance that noteworthy top-runners participate in the 2009 edition of this competition, included in the calendar of the official international races. For example, the Italian athletes Danilo Goffi and Denis Curzi, seeking for a call for the 2010 European Athletics Championship in Barcelona, for whom this marathon will be a really important showcase to show their skills.

Since November 29th 2008, the Bargello National Museum in Florence offers to the public the chance to marvel at the legendary Donatello’s restored bronze David.
The restoration was carried out in a worksite open to the public in the Donatello Room, where the masterpiece is on display since 1887, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Florence’ flood (4th November 1966).
The David (or Mercury) is a bronze sculpture created by Donatello around 1440, it is 158 cm high, has a maximum diameter 51 cm long and is probably the most famous and admired work of the artist, emblematic symbol of the Italian fifteenth century, with many not still revealed meanings.

In Florence, the special event “Astronomia in piazza” (“Astronomy in the public squares”) keeps on going on; we are talking about a project started on May 3rd 2009, which will end only on December 31st.
Such an idea was created by the astronomer Emiliano Ricci, in cooperation with the department of culture of the City of Florence and the Unesco Office, on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the first sky observations thanks to Galileo Galilei’s telescope.

From 11th to 13th September 2009, Fragranze N° 7 will have as protagonists the world of artistic and selective perfumery and the evolution of olfactory culture. The event’s theme, created by the architect Alessandro Moradei, is fluidity, conveyed by light, iridescence and transparent bubbles that are carried over into the stands and the exhibition area.
There will be 160 different great international brands in the field of high quality perfumery participating in the 7th edition of this great event: here you will find the most exclusive fragrances, several original body care and wellness products and any sort of high quality crafts and unique scented accessories.
The event presents a rich calendar of events organized by Pitti Immagine and the exhibitors, all to discover and “sniff”: talk shows, installations, photography exhibitions and presentations.
Il Profumo del Futuro: Let’s begin with four interesting talk-shows at the Alcatraz area of the Stazione Leopolda, where Italian and international experts from the world of quality perfumery, wine-and-food, fashion, design and communication on Friday afternoon 11th and the morning of 12th September will discuss on topics such as: “What will the future smell like? Do we all have the same type of nose?”.
Among the new elements of this edition, we remind you Spring, the special area dedicated to the young “brand new fragrances brands” which for the first time will have the chance to make their debuts with the international public and to be launched on the market.

The wonderful city of Florence uses to commemorate its ancient folkloristic traditions, and also this year, it will celebrate the original and cheerful feast of Rificolona.
The Rificolona in fact, still today remains the traditional Florentine feast, which is celebrated with a lot of events, shows and parades which take place in all the city districts and which several Florentine citizens and foreigners take part to.
The word “Rificolona” derives from the ancient term “fierucola”, which means “little but important feast”. It dates back to the years before the 20th century, when on every September 7th the farmers living in the surrounding area used to gather and walked with small colored-paper lanterns from Vallombrosa and Impruneta hills towards SS. Annunziata square, in the centre of the city, to pay homage to the Virgin Mary, and also to sell their hand-made products under the loggia with arcades of Spedale degli Innocenti on the occasion of the Fair (more…)
