Omar Galliani exhibition in Turin, from March 6th to May 18th

omar-galliani-torinoThe Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Turin dedicated to Omar Galliani the second chapter of “Dialogues“, an exhibition and research project about the Museum permanent collections, that want to establish a dialogue with contemporary artists known on the international art scene.

The project “Dialogues” invites the artists to realize an exhibition to relate their works with the museum masterpieces.

Omar Galliani chose to refer to the important graphic heritage of the museum, which includes about 30,000 works and has recently been exposed in the new Gallery Department of Drawings and Prints.

The exhibition, which title is “L’Opera al nero“, is held at GAM Underground Project, an area of over 1,000 square meters, and includes a selection of 30 big works, all made with the technique of pencil drawing on table.

The exhibition starts from the first artist works, dated back to the mid-seventies, to the last productions. It’s a way to discover Omar Galliani’s career, with his most symbolic and mystic works, developed with a formal rigor, together with the extraordinary technique that has always distinguished him.

An important volume of 300 pages accompanies the exhibition.

Eve Arnold, exhibition in Turin – Palazzo Madama

Just how curious she was is evident in the timeline of the projects she undertook in her long career. It takes up one whole wall and makes for an illuminating read, not just because of the longevity of her career – from the late 1940s to the 90s – but for the range of subjects she tackled.

She’s been documentary and portrait painters, her name is linked to the portraits of high society and Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe as well as presidents and activists such as Malcolm X, who personally chose her to document his battle for civil rights.

Famous are his reporting in remote regions of the planet commissioned by “Life”, the “Sunday Times” and the most prestigious magazines of the period.

The 83 photographs in the exhibition, in black and white and color, are taken from her most important and significant works as a photographer from 1950 to 1984 and are divided in 12 sections:
“Fashion Show in Harlem,” “Malcolm X,” “Voodoo Rituals to Haiti “,” The important first 5 minutes of a newborn baby “,” Marlene Dietrich “,” Marilyn Monroe “,” Joan Crawford “,”Celebrities”, “Afghanistan”, “Behind the Veil”, “China” and “India.”

The exhibition is accompanied by a book containing the selection of photographs of the exhibition, a contribution from the journalist and photography critic Angela Madesani and from the famous writer Simonetta Agnello Hornby.
